Cat Art show LA Returns for a third Year

Cat Art show LA, an art exhibition dedicated to the beauty of cats, is back for a third time, opening Thursday, June 14th, 2018, at think tank Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. The show will feature more than 100 globally-recognized and emerging artists, ranging from paintings to sculpture.

Cat Art show LA was created by Susan Michals, who is also the creator of CatCon LA, which will take place August 5 and 6 this year (more to come about this exciting event here on The conscious cat very soon!) I was curious to learn what inspired Susan to create the art show. “I have worked as a journalist for over 10 years in art, culture and celebrity for outlets like Vanity fair Online, wall street Journal, and Huffington Post, and one day I decided it was time to marry my love of cats with my love of art,” said Susan. “The first exhibition was in 2014, and over 4,500 people came by to view and purchase the works we had by artists like Shepard Fairey, FAILE and Gary Baseman.”

Giving back to animal rescue is important to Susan with all the events she creates, and cat Art show LA is no exception. “Every exhibition, we donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the art to a cat related charity,” said Susan. “This year, we are benefiting the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, as well as Kitten Rescue.” Kitten Rescue will be part of the show’s closing night party. “We’re calling it The Kitty Cuddle Party,” said Susan, “and we will have adoptable kittens onsite! Cats are works of art in themselves, after all.”

I asked Susan whether she had a favorite artist. “I love all artists, really, and 99% of the artists participating in this show are not cat artists,” said Susan. “When I approached them, I offered the theme of cats as muse. This could mean beloved, or antagonist – it’s up to the artist to depict what the feline means to them. many of the artists had never painted a cat before! In terms of my favorite cat-centric works ever, I have two: the first is The Widow, by Frederick Dielman, and Les Mutantes, by Leonor Fini.
